This topic has been around for so long and has become such a mainstream habit that sometimes I don't know what to say. It keeps popping up in all my research.

If Google were to simply filter out brands that appear first on their blogs/sources using a simple filter for inauthentic mentions, it would create a lot of confusion, but it would also take some time for this to be reflected in AI visibility dashboards.

In that case, ChatGPT and other LLMs might have a different approach...

Complicated times!

@Lily Ray love the article! I agree and confirm— in my experiments, sometimes this kind of stuff is just free marketing for competitors, not to mention the cringe…

I might have some data on the other half of the story soon: how effective are these in search outside Google (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.). Teaser: they can help lift brand visibility in less crowded areas but at the same time, can be counter effective up to 40% of the time (cited or found but no mention).
